How to Style the Classic Mac coat

In the history books of fashion, the classic mac has earned its place. From its advent in 1824 by Charles Macintosh, through its early days of protecting British soldiers from the rain and mud during WWI (hence its other name, the trench coat), to its pinnacle in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the mackintosh coat has now become a classic staple of any woman’s wardrobe. This ubiquitous number never goes out of style.

But while most of us own a mac, it tends to be one of those items that shuffles its way to the back of the wardrobe because we simply don’t know how to wear it without looking like we’re going to a fancy dress party dressed as Inspector Gadget or Sherlock Holmes.

On the contrary dear Watson, the mac is so versatile that it can be styled in a multitude of outfits. Your mac can take you from day to night, weekday to weekend, and this autumn it deserves its place at the front of your wardrobe.

Whether you have a long or short mac, a classic beige or a bright colour, the mac provides a flattering shape, creating an hourglass silhouette when tied at the waist. Not to mention, it is that perfect blend of effortlessly chic and sharply casual. So grab your mac and let it work its magic.

1. The smart office look

The mac is, simply put, the perfect work coat. Buttoned up, it’s ideal for those chilly autumn mornings on the way to the office, but also great for the warmer afternoons on your way home.
If your office opts for a smarter dress code, wear it like Zooey Deschanel with sheer tights, a pretty floral dress, and kitten heels. Or be bold like Emma Watson and go-bare legged with a pretty blouse and a black pencil skirt with brogue flats. Or take hints from Olivia Palermo and wear a cute shirt dress with bare legs statement shoe boots.

2. The casual work look

For those who work in a more casual office environment, the mac can be worn with an adorable, quirky outfit. This outfit was perfected by trench coat lover Alexa Chung with a jumper dress, black tights, and heeled ankle boots.

You can also rock this look by wearing your mac open over a short skirt and a cute jumper with brogues. Or be like Liv and pair a classic tee with fitted black trousers and ballet flats. If you’re after a quirkier office look, be like Clemence Poesy with black jeans, a white top, a black fedora, and brogues.

This looks works particularly well with monochrome colours and Parisian style stripes.

3. The night-time look

For an instant night-time casual chic, drape your mac over your shoulders. This works especially well over a LBD with strappy sandals or heeled shoe-boots, as worn by our friend Alexa again.
If you fancy a quirkier night look, take note from Emma Watson—wear a statement studded mac with sexy black heeled boots and sheer polka dot tights.

4. The casual weekend look

The mac adds a certain classiness to a casual weekend outfit. Wear it open over jeans, heeled boots, and a cute top.

As worn by Blair Eadie Bee, team your mac with a cute tee, scarf, skinny jeans, and statement heels to look classy yet casual. If you’re after a relaxed weekend look, Gwyneth Paltrow has this look spot on with skinny dark jeans, thigh-high black leather flat boots, and white tee. If you’re after an alternative look, follow in the footsteps of Izabel Goulart with a band t-shirt, skinny black jeans, and flat ankle boots.
